Artist Statement: A painter for over 25 yrs, Nancy Ann Rice brings experience and experimentation to her paintings. A web designer and art teacher, Nancy devotes her life to the creative process. Her latest series of work she calls "The Abstracted Landscape".
These acrylic paintings on canvas and board use a unique process that allows paint to flow into a fantastic arrangement of color and shape that evoke memory of wooded landscapes and under water scenes. No two are alike, and no two can be duplicated.
Landscapes hold special appeal in my work. Living not far from the woods and the ocean for many years, I’m grateful I can easily be among the beauty of nature. With population growth and urban squall, I see more high density housing being built, and wonder what beautiful area may soon be gone. I create landscapes to keep nature in mind for all of us.
Moving from the realism genre in watercolors and oils, I now work more abstractly with acrylic paint and acrylic medium. By spraying water, using my fingers and palette knife, I pour paint and move it about the canvas. Texture is developed through use of mediums, gels, salt, sand, and found objects. As the paint settles and dries, images evolve and the composition takes shape. The painting often takes on a life of its own. It becomes a memory of a peaceful lakeside retreat or seems a glimpse to the world under the water’s surface. I am not concerned if the painting looks like an actual place, if it evokes a feeling of place, then my intent is achieved.
All is not immediately apparent in this abstracted body of work. Each painting is unique and cannot be duplicated. Take time to look, you may see images hidden within the piece that are revealed only through exploration.
