Bio/Artist Statement:

Nancy Bowman has exhibited in a number of galleries in the Bay Area, as well as exhibitions at the Kaestle Gallery in Mainz, Germany.  From her early creative work with drawing, painting, and photography, Ms. Bowman continues her exploration of form through sculpture.

"I've always been passionate about art and believe that art can take many forms.  An incredible painting, a wonderful sculpture, or a beautiful garden all contain the elements of composition and form and all can evoke a positive emotional response.

One of my earliest experiences with sculpture occurred during my first trip to Europe when I saw the works of Michelangelo for the first time. Seeing the "Pieta" and Michelangelo's "David" was a powerful experience.  A number of artists have influenced my work.  I admire Rodin's impressionist sculptures as well as Giacometti's elongated figures.  I was fascinated by the slender figures in African folk art when I visited Kenya and Tanzania several years ago.

In my sculpture, I strive to combine classical and contemporary elements in an attempt to  forge a unique expression. I portray emotions through gesture and try to capture fleeting thoughts and feelings and suspend them in time.

In 1998 my husband and I relocated to England for two years.  After living most of my life in California I welcomed the opportunity to experience life in another country.  I was able to take art classes there and enjoy easy access to the wonderful museums and art galleries in England and Europe.  It was an amazing experience!"

Nancy Bowman, a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, has studied privately with Michael Linstrom, Bruno Lucchesi, and Marianne de Hatten Groh.  She has completed additional course work at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and West Valley College.
